Polar Bear plunge at Dallas Road attracts a large crowd

According to Environment Canada, the water temperature was 8 C in the Salish Sea

Hundreds of people gathered to welcome in the New Year on Jan. 1 by diving into the freezing waters of the Salish Sea.

Karine Godbout hosted the official event at the beach alongside Dallas Road, between Memorial Crescent and Ebert Street.

It was a bright and sunny day, but that did not stop swimmers from having fires and hot beverages on standby as they got out of the water.

For many at Dallas Road, it was a quick plunge in and out of the water, but some decided to brave the frigid waters a little longer.

The event officially started at noon, but some brave souls had already decided to take a plunge before everything started.

According to Environment Canada, the water temperature around Dallas Road was 8 C in the Salish Sea, with low tide at 3:56 p.m.
